Is your data backup efficient enough for the way that you work?
Recent times have caused business owners to realise just how uncertain the world of work is, especially when the pandemic seemed to arrive one day and cause pandemonium the next – the ramifications of which many are still recovering from to this day.
This realisation has caused business owners around the globe to look for the most efficient way of working should lightning strike twice. The most common method during the pandemic and since is Cloud computing – the Cloud’s ability to allow your team to work from anywhere with a stable internet connection makes it a popular choice for most, especially those who adopted a partially remote working team during the peak of the pandemic and quickly realised the benefits of doing so when managed correctly.
Regardless of the popularity of the Cloud, in our previous article we mentioned that it isn’t necessarily for everyone, as some businesses simply have no choice but to continue using their on-premise IT, and some may even benefit from employing a mixture of the two.
In the remainder of this article, we will explore the positives and negatives of on-premise IT and, hopefully, assist you in deciding whether it is right for you.
The positives of On-Premise IT
Access – no matter the circumstances
With or without an internet connection you are still able to carry out key work functions no matter the circumstances – compared with the Cloud that always needs a stable internet connection.
You are only dependant on yourself
You are completely self-reliant – you only have to be concerned about your own systems that you are reliant upon. Your vendor could go out of business and leave you hung out to dry – unsure on what your next move should be, which in turn could mean a lot of downtime.
The negatives of On-Premise IT
The upfront investment and continued cost
You could spend an extortionate amount of money on your on-premise IT. The hardware, software, and other services aren’t cheap to keep operational, and they don’t even have a very long lifespan. Typically, on-premise IT solutions have a lifespan as short as five years on average – this means that you must somehow find the potentially huge capital investment far too frequently! There is also no guarantee that your infrastructure won’t become dated in that time, resulting in your failure to receive a good return on your investment – and upgrading in the meantime will also likely be costly.
Inability to scale
Processing becomes very difficult – if not impossible – to achieve, and in the process can cause serious downtime. The Cloud, as already stated, can grow and shrink to your whim at the click of a finger – but On-Premise IT cannot.
Obviously, it is essential that your tech supports your business, and the way in which you work, as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Both the Cloud and on-premise IT have their positives and negatives – you must make a decision based on what’s right for you, your team, and ultimately the prolonged success of your organisation. We would love to tell you which one is best for you but, unfortunately, we can’t.
